What is Long-Term Care?

Long-term care encompasses a variety of services designed to meet the medical and non-medical needs of individuals who are unable to perform basic activities of daily living (ADLs) due to chronic illness, disability, or aging. These services can be provided at home, in the community, or in specialized facilities.

What are Activities of Daily Living (ADLs)?

Activities of Daily Living (ADLs) refer to the basic tasks essential for independent living, including bathing, dressing, eating, transferring (moving from bed to chair), toileting, and continence. The ability or inability to perform these activities is often used to determine the level of care an individual requires.

What is Medicare?

Medicare is a federal health insurance program primarily for individuals aged 65 and older, but it also covers certain younger individuals with disabilities or specific diseases. Medicare helps cover hospital care (Part A), medical services (Part B), and prescription drugs (Part D).

Will Medicare Pay for Florida Medicaid?

No, Medicare and Medicaid are separate programs with different eligibility criteria and coverage. Medicare does not pay for long-term care services provided by Medicaid. However, individuals eligible for both Medicare and Medicaid (known as dual-eligible) can receive benefits from both programs, with Medicaid covering long-term care services not covered by Medicare. While Medicare may help with rehabilitation in a limited sense after a hospital stay, it will not cover long-term custodial care.

What is the Difference Between an Assisted Living Facility and a Skilled Nursing Home?

An assisted living facility provides housing, personal care, and support services for individuals who need assistance with daily activities but do not require the intensive medical care provided by a skilled nursing home. A skilled nursing home offers 24-hour medical care and rehabilitation services for individuals with serious health conditions that require ongoing medical attention and supervision.

How Will I Pay for the Costs of Monthly Long-Term Care?

Paying for long-term care can be a significant financial challenge. Options to cover these costs include personal savings, long-term care insurance, Medicaid, and veterans benefits. Each option has specific eligibility requirements and coverage limitations, so it is important to explore all available resources and plan accordingly.

What Role Can Long-Term Care Insurance Play?

Long-term care insurance can help cover the costs of care provided in a variety of settings, including your home, an assisted living facility, or a nursing home. This type of insurance is designed to reduce the financial burden of long-term care expenses and can be an essential part of your overall financial planning strategy.
